Ulcer medications - proton pump inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors include:

  • Lansoprazole (Prevacid, Prevacid OTC, Prevacid SoluTab)
  • Pantoprazole (Protonix)
  • Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
  • Esomeprazole (Nexium)
  • Omeprazole (Prilosec, Prilosec OTC, Zegerid Original Formulation)
  • Dexlansoprazole (Dexilant)

Proton pump inhibitors may sometimes be combined with sodium bicarbonate. Such combination includes:

  • Omeprazole/ sodium bicarbonate (Zegerid and Zegerid OTC)
 

Depletions

Taking proton pump inhibitors may deplete vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

Low levels of vitamin B12 may cause any of the following symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Anemia
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Personality changes
  • Confusion

Low levels of vitamin B12 may increase the risk of heart diseases.
